I hit the mat this morning for the first time in a few days… and let me tell you – I FEEL GREAT.

Maintaining a regular home yoga practice isn’t always the easiest, but of all the little changes I’ve made, this morning ritual has by far given back the most.

The most common questions I get from my friends are “How do you find time to wake up early everyday to do yoga?”  Truth be told, sometimes I don’t always find the time -and that’s okay.  Having a morning ritual is a great way to carve out essential personal time and create something comforting and consistent in a world that can be anything but that.

When I first decided I was going to put together a morning ritual I wasn’t sure where to start (especially the yoga part).

As a helpful push in the right direction I’ve put together a simple sample morning ritual that can be completed in 20-30 mins and will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to start your day.

JUMP START YOUR MORNING!

1)      Start with a cup of hot water and lemon

Hot water and lemon is a great way to get a boost in the morning.  The lemon acts as a natural kick starter for your system and is quite refreshing.  If hot water and lemon isn’t your thing, try green tea.

I personally enjoy gazing out the window while I do this.  There’s something about seeing the city before all the traffic, busy bodies and noise takes over.

2)      Do some gentle stretching

Getting my blood circulating first thing in the morning really gets my energy up.

I start my day by doing yoga, specifically Sun Salutations. The beauty of doing Sun Salutations is, if you have limited time you can do a few, and if you have a bit more time to play with, you can do a lot!  Practising this yoga sequence is great way to get familiar with basic yoga poses and control how much or little time you spend doing yoga in the morning (especially if you are just starting out).

Below I’ve included a diagram illustrating how to do a Sun Salutation.  If you’d like to see it demonstrated, search Sun Salutation on YouTube.  I used YouTube a lot when I first started doing yoga.  It’s a great, cost effective way to delve deeper into yoga without reaching deep into your pockets.

3)      Give Thanks

Once I’m stretched out and feeling chill I like to take a few minutes to think about the things that are going well for me. Even when I’m feeling my most stressed and overwhelmed, taking a little time out to say “thanks” for the good things in my life helps set the tone for the rest of the day.

If you’re looking to add a fresh spin to your morning, implementing a morning ritual is probably just what you need.  Use the sample ritual I gave above or enjoy building something unique for yourself.

Is there something you can’t start your morning without?  Please comment –   I’d love to read about it!
